Three Dakinis Chod

Retreat with Tulku Pema Khandro

Hybrid: San Diego and Online

Online: Mar 11-14
In-Person: Mar 11-15
Vajra Sangha Members: Mar 10-16

Step into the classical practice and study of one of Tibetan Buddhism’s most profound and transformative practices. Chöd—literally meaning “to cut”—offers a direct path to cut the root of suffering through radical compassion and fearless self-awareness. Chod challenges practitioners to offer their mental body as food for all beings, transforming the poison of self-grasping into the nectar of bodhicitta.

Although the tradition was developed by the 11th-century yogini Machig Labdrön, it was later compiled into the liturgies practiced today by great masters like the third Karmapa Rangjung Dorje and Longchenpa in the 13th to 14th century. This retreat exploring the Chod instructions from these two figures and their exploration of the connection between Chod and Dzogchen Nyingthig, as described by two of the greatest Tibetan masters in history.

The Chod traditions from Tibet are rich and varied, with some focusing on the black Dakini, Troma Nagmo and others including the red Vajrayogini. The daily practice taught in this retreat includes all three forms of the Dakini meditation, peaceful, magnetizing, and wrathful. It is based on a compilation of Chod practices called the Rinchen Trengwa, the Jeweled Garland of Chod. This is the most comprehensive and extensive Chod system, but here it is offered in its concise form, including the essence of its array of practices, the Three Dakini Chod. Though concise, it is a complete tantric practice integrating all essential elements of Chöd meditation.

The three Dakinis represent the varied forms of wisdom required to skillfully heal our minds and engage with the world. The peaceful Dakini practice is a gentle practice of discovering freedom from karma through purification. The magnetizing Dakini practice illuminates inner resourcefulness and the alluring power of joy and love to dissolve obstacles naturally. The wrathful dakini practice of Troma Nagmo illuminates the clarity, decisiveness, and directness of fierce compassion.

What makes this retreat extraordinary:

  • Study advice from Longchenpa on the essence of Chod and special instructions on overcoming obstacles
  • Experience the lesser known pacifying and magnetizing Chod meditations
  • Learn the history of the Rinchen Trengwa Chod
  • Receive detailed instruction in philosophical foundations from the Prajñāpāramitā teachings
  • Practice Prajñāpāramitā meditation, based on the Mother Buddha of Non-dual Awareness
  • Learn the Red Vajrayogini Magnetizing Chod practice
  • Learn visualization techniques for the Black Dakini feast offering
  • Master the haunting melodies and rhythms of traditional Chod chanting
  • Experience guided sessions that progressively deepen your capacity for releasing self-deception

The Rinchen Trengwa Concise Chöd is a profound meditation method for working with desire, fear, and the subtle fixations that shape our experience. Rather than rejecting these states, Chöd invites a direct encounter with compassion and clarity, allowing them to soften, transform, and reveal their underlying wisdom.

While Chod is often known for its practice of working with demons, this practice also includes the purification practice of Prajñāpāramitā, a simple profound six phase consciousness transference practice, the magnetizing Red Dakini Chod meditation and concise potent Black Dakini, Troma Chod meditation.

Practitioners are guided to recognize the innate openness of mind through a practice that is both tender and fiercely honest, echoing the spirit of the great Chödpas who understood that liberation arises not from avoidance, but from fearless presence.

Participants will receive guidance, practice support, and an atmosphere of warmth and authenticity rooted in the living lineage. To bring the meaning of the practice directly into one’s experience, the chanting will be in both English and Tibetan. Whether attending in San Diego or online, this is an opportunity to enter the heart of Chöd in a supportive community dedicated to experiential understanding and genuine transformation.

Experience the transformative path of Chod meditation within the supportive container of spiritual community. This profound lineage practice of meeting deepens powerfully when practiced together. In Chod, obstacles are neither rejected nor suppressed; they are invited into awareness and liberated through offering, courage, and insight. Practicing in community strengthens this process, creating an amplified field of presence where each individual’s journey is supported by the collective intention to open, release, and recognize innate wisdom.

In this retreat, our practice community becomes a living mandala. Through guided sessions, supportive group practice, partner discussions, and time to internalize the teachings, participants discover how the essential elements of Chod unfold more fully in shared practice.

Join us in San Diego or online to enter this profound meditation cycle in a field of mutual support, receiving the strength, clarity, and connection that help Chod take root long after the retreat concludes.

What to Pack – Clothing & Attire for Practice and Play

San Diego weather in March can vary (weather apps show 44-66 and possible showers) —mornings and evenings may be quite cool, while midday sun can occasionally be intense. Please bring layers so you can stay comfortable in all conditions, from crisp early hours to warm afternoons. Think breathable fabrics, light sweaters or shawls, and sun protection.

You’ll want to bring comfortable clothing for both sitting meditation sessions and movement practices—think soft, loose-fitting attire that allows you to shift easily between sitting, standing, gentle yoga and walking meditation. We’ll be spending time both indoors and outdoors, so please plan accordingly.

On Saturday night, we’ll gather for a festive Tsok feast—a celebratory offering practice. This is a beautiful time to dress in your fine spiritual or cultural attire—whatever makes you feel radiant and honors celebratory aspect of the evening.

There is also a jacuzzi on-site, so if you’d like to enjoy a restorative soak under the stars, please bring a swimsuit and towel.

Finally, on Sunday afternoon, we’ll enjoy a casual beach day together. We’ll be sharing practices by the sea—so bring beach attire, a towel or blanket to sit on, sun protection, and anything else you need to feel nourished by the ocean environment. This will be a relaxed, joyful closing to our time together.

To help maintain the sacred container of our retreat, all residential participants are invited to contribute a small amount of daily seva—selfless service—as a way to support the wellbeing of the group and the retreat environment. This might include simple tasks such as tidying shared spaces, preparing tea, helping with clearing the practice space, or supporting mealtime logistics. These small acts of mindfulness and care are an integral part of the retreat experience, allowing us to co-create a clean, serene, and harmonious space together.

Seva assignments will be chosen during check-in, and we encourage everyone to select a task that feels both manageable and meaningful. This is a beautiful opportunity to bring practice into action, deepen community connection, and support the retreat in a spirit of generosity and devotion.

What to Bring

  • Yoga mat or something comfortable to lie down on for śavāsana (corpse pose). The floor is tiled, so if you need extra cushion, please bring a blanket, camping pad, or other padding to support your body.

  • Meditation cushion or bench – whatever helps you sit comfortably for extended periods.

  • Journal and pen – for reflections, insights, and integration.

  • Non-perishable snacks – to support your energy between meals. Please choose items that are quiet to eat and easy to store.

  • Water bottle – preferably one with a lid to prevent spills.

  • Toiletries – please bring unscented or naturally-scented personal care products to support a low-fragrance, scent-sensitive environment. This includes items like toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and menstrual care products.

  • Clothing layers – for shifting temperatures throughout the day (see Clothing & Attire section).

  • Swimsuit and towel – for the jacuzzi or beach.

  • Beach items – such as a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a lightweight towel or blanket for sitting on the sand.

What Not to Bring

  • Candles, incense, or burning resins – open flame is not permitted, and strong scents can be disruptive or triggering to others.

  • Perfumes, essential oils, or heavily scented products – please refrain from bringing any items with strong or synthetic fragrances to support a scent-free environment for those with chemical sensitivities.

  • Alcohol, recreational drugs, or mind-altering substances – this is a sober retreat container.

  • Pets or animals – even well-behaved ones (unless pre-approved service animals).

  • Loud electronics or speakers – please use headphones for any personal listening.

  • Strongly opinionated reading material – to help preserve inner spaciousness and reduce distraction.
