Finding Rest in Meditation

Annual Dzogchen Retreat with Tulku Pema Khandro, PhD

Hybrid Retreat: San Diego and Online

Online: July 20-23
In-Person: July 20-24
Vajra Sangha Members: July 19-24

What if the deepest meditation isn’t about effort — but about finally, fully letting go?

In the fourteenth century, the Dzogchen master Longchenpa composed one of the most luminous texts in the Buddhist contemplative tradition: Finding Comfort and Ease in Meditation (bsam gtan ngal gso). Part instruction manual, part contemplative poetry, this classic of the Nyingma lineage lays out a complete path from the foundations of meditation to the direct experience of our own innate wisdom — not through striving, but through a profound and tender release of everything that obscures what has always been here.

This retreat is an invitation to enter that path.

Through lectures, guided meditation, group practice, yoga, small group discussion, and periods of quiet integration, we will move through Longchenpa’s instructions on the stages of meditation and the ways to unravel habitual grasping — discovering what he calls the uncontrived natural state. This is meditation in its most essential and esoteric form: not a technique imposed from without, but a homecoming to the awareness that precedes all technique.

Longchenpa understood that practitioners arrive through different doors. Some find their way through the body. Others through energy. Others through the direct contemplation of mind itself. His teachings honor this diversity, offering multiple gateways to the same timeless recognition — the discovery of rigpa, our primordial awareness beyond conceptual elaboration.

And this is not work meant to be done alone. The retreat itself becomes a living container for practice, where the shared presence and dedication of fellow practitioners creates the conditions in which these teachings come most fully alive. There is something irreplaceable about sitting together in silence, about the mutual support of a community gathered around a single profound intention.

Come for the beauty of Longchenpa’s poetry. Come for the precision of his meditation instructions. Come for the rare chance to rest — truly rest — in contemplative depth, guided by teachings transmitted through an unbroken lineage from the earliest Dzogchen masters to the present day. Leave with a practice that doesn’t end when the retreat does, but continues to unfold in the texture of everyday life.

This is letting go in its sweetest sense. This is finding ease.

This retreat is held within the support of a committed spiritual community, where shared intention and disciplined practice create stable conditions for engaging Longchenpa’s Trilogy of Ease. Recognition of awareness is practiced collectively, which supports continuity, reduces distraction, and strengthens the ability to remain present with the instructions.

The retreat container functions as a mandala of practice in the practical sense: a field of mutual presence, accountability, and integration. Through group practice, guided sessions, and periods of quiet assimilation, participants deepen their capacity to remain undistracted within the natural state as taught in Dzogchen.

What to Pack – Clothing & Attire for Practice and Play

San Diego weather in July can vary—mornings and evenings may be cool, while midday sun can be intense. Please bring layers so you can stay comfortable in all conditions, from crisp early hours to warm afternoons. Think breathable fabrics, light sweaters or shawls, and sun protection.

You’ll want to bring comfortable clothing for both sitting meditation sessions and movement practices—think soft, loose-fitting attire that allows you to shift easily between sitting, standing, gentle yoga and walking meditation. We’ll be spending time both indoors and outdoors, so please plan accordingly.

On closing night, we’ll gather for a festive Tsok feast—a celebratory offering practice. This is a beautiful time to dress in your finest spiritual or cultural attire—whatever makes you feel radiant and honors celebratory aspect of the evening.

There is also a jacuzzi on-site, so if you’d like to enjoy a restorative soak under the stars, please bring a swimsuit and towel.

Finally, on Friday, we’ll enjoy a casual beach day together. We’ll be sharing practices by the sea—so bring beach attire, a towel or blanket to sit on, sun protection, and anything else you need to feel nourished by the ocean environment. This will be a relaxed, joyful closing to our time together.

To help maintain the sacred container of our retreat, all residential participants are invited to contribute a small amount of daily seva—selfless service—as a way to support the wellbeing of the group and the retreat environment. This might include simple tasks such as helping prepare breakfast, tidying shared spaces, preparing tea, helping with clearing the practice space, or supporting mealtime logistics. These small acts of mindfulness and care are an integral part of the retreat experience, allowing us to co-create a clean, serene, and harmonious space together.

Seva assignments will be chosen during check-in, and we encourage everyone to select a task that feels both manageable and meaningful. This is a beautiful opportunity to bring practice into action, deepen community connection, and support the retreat in a spirit of generosity and devotion.

What to Bring

  • Yoga mat or something comfortable to lie down on for śavāsana (corpse pose). The floor is tiled, so if you need extra cushion, please bring a blanket, camping pad, or other padding to support your body.

  • Meditation cushion or bench – whatever helps you sit comfortably for extended periods.

  • Journal and pen – for reflections, insights, and integration.

  • Non-perishable snacks – to support your energy between meals. Please choose items that are quiet to eat and easy to store.

  • Water bottle – preferably one with a lid to prevent spills.

  • Toiletries – please bring unscented or naturally-scented personal care products to support a low-fragrance, scent-sensitive environment. This includes items like toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and menstrual care products.

  • Clothing layers – for shifting temperatures throughout the day (see Clothing & Attire section).

  • Swimsuit and towel – for the jacuzzi or beach.

  • Beach items – such as a sun hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a lightweight towel or blanket for sitting on the sand.

What Not to Bring

  • Candles, incense, or burning resins – open flame is not permitted, and strong scents can be disruptive or triggering to others.

  • Perfumes, essential oils, or heavily scented products – please refrain from bringing any items with strong or synthetic fragrances to support a scent-free environment for those with chemical sensitivities.

  • Alcohol, recreational drugs, or mind-altering substances – this is a sober retreat container.

  • Pets or animals – even well-behaved ones (unless pre-approved service animals).

  • Loud electronics or speakers – please use headphones for any personal listening.

  • Strongly opinionated reading material – to help preserve inner spaciousness and reduce distraction.
